Aquarium Conditions For Angel Fish

Originating from the Amazon river region, angel fish- or Pterophyllum -are one of the most special varieties of cichlid. Pterophyllum scalare is the most popular type of angel fish. It is silver with black stripes, has elaborate dorsal and anal fins and a long pointed tail.

Although angel fish are most suited to acidic water, due to the fact that they are being bred in captivity and crossbred, they are now more adaptable to different types of water. When buying angel fish, it is advisable, however, to ask the store owner about the suitable water conditions you should place the fish into.

Apart from the ideal water conditions, you should gather information about the type of habitat angel fish prefer, before purchasing them. Usually, this type of fish lives in environments that provide a plenitude of plant life and rocks.

The type of food angel fish will need is another issue a future owner should take into consideration. In their natural habitat, angel fish are carnivorous. Usually, they would float to the surface of the water and just feed on small fish or insects that might dwell on the surface. When in an aquarium, they will be fed angel fish flakes, bloodworms or shrimp. It is not uncommon for parents to eat their young, because of the eggs being removed from parents.

In addition, this variety of fish is just as prone to illnesses as any other type. The plants that an owner will put in an aquarium may have snails, that are a main cause for diseases. Try to check all plants for snails before placing them into the tank. Another cause for fish disease is the water. If the quality of the water is inappropriate, it may have a deadly effect on the inhabitants of the aquarium.
