The main characteristic of a barracuda is his very sharp teeth. He is not called the tiger of the sea for nothing, because his body is specially build to hunt and kill. The barracuda's body is very long and torpedo like enabling him to move very fast. Because of his huge appetite and the special body that allows him to satisfy it, this fish have been able to survive for more than 50 million years.
When it comes to feeding do not let a lazy barracuda fish floating slowly in the water fool you. If they spot the prey you do not really have the chance see what happened. These fish are part of the predators of the sea and, like any other predators, have adapted to the environment around them making the spotted prey almost a sure victim.
The barracuda fish has a very flexible body adapted to hunt in the coral reefs. It also has a swim bladder to help him twist and turn through the extremities of a coral reef. The swim bladder also helps the barracuda not to sick although he is usually heavier than the seawater. Basically the bladder can be inflated or deflated and thus the fish can control whether he decides to raise or lower his body in the water.
The great barracuda fish measures up to 6 feet and weights almost 100 pounds. Because of his big appetite he is like an eating machine, so if you happen to meet one while diving you better stay out of his way. There are some reports of barracuda attacks but these are usually very rare and most of the times these accidents happen because of the victims.
