Reef aquariums are the aquariums which contain live corals and other species of animals related to corals. Keeping such reef aquariums in homes has become in recent years a hobby that many people take up, especially due to the advancement in human knowledge on marine livings. The reef aquariums are also called reef tanks and their main purpose is to recreate the environment the corals have in their place of origin, usually the ocean. As to differentiate from other types of aquariums, which mainly offer the life environment for fish, the reef aquariums only contain invertebrate beings.
In order for a reef tank to function properly and keep its "inhabitants" in a perfect state, it has to accomplish some technical requirements. First of all, the aquarium is made of glass or acrylics, which make vision more accessible. Secondly, in order for the reefs to have a perfect environment, filtration is needed. This feature is made by placing different rocks inside the reef aquariums. Then, another thing to be considered is the water movement, as corals need different flow rates as to ensure their existence. Some specific devices are used for this purpose, and their purpose is to drain the water and place it back.
Filtration is very important in maintaining reef aquariums as there are species of corals that do not fully rely on photosynthesis and need constant oxygen. Lightning, as in any other aquarium, is also essential. For corals, it is mostly important, and that is why those who keep such reef aquariums must know the intensity to which the corals must be exposed. It is not sufficient sometimes to follow the natural rule of day/night lightning, as it might damage the coral growth. Eventually, when keeping a reef aquarium some devices must be used in order to heat or cool the atmosphere inside. As living beings, corals need to live in a constant temperature; therefore, depending on the temperature of the outside environment, namely the house where the aquarium is kept, heaters or chillers are to be installed.
Keeping a reef aquarium requires much attention but the reward comes accordingly. What better way to relax than sit in your sofa and enjoy the view of an ocean deep in front of your eyes?
