The Most Unusual Of All Salt Water Fish Species

One of the most mysterious salt water fish species is the seahorse, known for its odd shape and strange feeding habits. These exotic salt water fish also breed quite unusually, as the male seahorses actually give birth to the offspring. Many salt water fish aquarium owners try their hardest to keep seahorses in their tanks, and many of them fail. This is because seahorses have some special requirements that must be met in order for them to thrive. Of all the salt water fish species, seahorses are probably the pickiest eaters. They do no usually eat flake foods, frozen foods or pellets. These exotic salt water fish species typically enjoy crustaceans, such as brine shrimp and Gammarus, as long as they are fresh and not frozen. Salt water fish aquarium owners should keep all of these foods available to keep their seahorses alive. And even though they may be eaten in great quantities, brine shrimp and Gammarus fall short as balanced diets.

They should be pre-soaked in some sort of vitamin/HUFA mix beforehand. Salt water fish aquarium owners must also understand that seahorses are slow eaters, so they might not be able to get enough food if faster eaters get to all the nourishment first. Seahorses are the slowest and most methodical eaters of all exotic salt water fish, and even a single companion fish could get the bulk of any feedings if they're hungry enough. Even a small filter system could steal away the seahorse's food before they get to it, especially in a larger tank. Seahorses are best kept in smaller tanks with no other salt water fish species, and filtration systems should be turned down or off during their feeding times.
